Serene by Joyce Ann Burton-Sousa

Approach

What I am exploring lately is painting faces using a wide variety of media. I use the word "painting" deliberately, because that is how my work feels to me. I am painting with a variety of media. I work on the "edge," taking the two-dimensional format and expanding it or pushing its limits and playing with people's expectations of those limits. To keep the rich texture that is created available to the viewer, the frame is incorporated into the artwork itself. The frame is not something that is added later, is external to and "confines" the piece.

My aim is to create a complete piece of art that remains open to the viewer who then has the freedom to continue to enjoy the texture and to be able to witness and revisit the steps in the creative process. The work remains a part of the living world; organic and not sealed and set inside a time capsule.

These new framed paintings were featured in my presentation at the Artomatic Art Fair in Dupont Circle, DC running from March 8 - April 28, 2024.

The textures, colors and lines of Joyce's work are in one moment serenely complex, though at the same time they are imperfect enough to be real. I think it is this aesthetic polarity that makes her pottery so popular, and not just in this shop, but in the locations around Asheville where it regularly sells out. Joyce has also enjoyed success as a watercolorist; her paintings have been sold nationally and abroad.”
